The day started off with an text message from our Lead Teaching Pastor saying he was feeling under the weather and that he wouldn’t be able to make it today and that Brian Phipps, who was to team teach with him today, was going to speak.

That was  shocking news to find out during the production run through at 7:30am for an 8:30am service. Despite the news, we didn’t miss a beat. To cover for what Dan was going to do, Troy asked me to do the announcements Pastor Dan was going to make and Brian flew solo for the message, doing a great job despite the last minute notice. Brian preached even while his own son was being taken to the hospital for a medical condition that rose between the 5:00 & 6:30pm services.

We message was on “Love Like You’re Dying,” as we are on our 2nd week of our series Live Like You’re Dying. Our worship set was centered on this and was filled with fun music and artistic flare. The highlights of the day were when Julie Smith danced to “How He Loves.”

The second highlight was when we did the Steve Winwood tune, “Higher Love.” Greg Gibbs knocked it out of the park. He was the perfect fit for the song. (BTW- I decided to rewrite the ending during the 6:30p service and tried ending it 2 meas early. I left the band hangin – I was on drums tonight)

Brian spoke from John 11 where Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. The big idea for this weekend was “we prove our love for Jesus by how we love others.

Brian mentioned:

  1. Love shows up. (John 11:7)
  2. Love joins in. (John 11:34-35)
  3. Love gives all. (John 11:53)

Yesterday was also the second week of having two Sunday evening services, making a grand total of 5 Sunday worship services at our Lenexa campus.

To facilitate volunteers for our production team and musicians, we’ve split the morning and evening teams up. Both rehearsing on Thursday night. It has been successful for two weeks now, even with the complicated musical pieces we’ve done.

We have an amazing team of volunteers who are constantly improving and raising the bar of excellence. I love being part of this culture.
